I came across this festival via a pamphlet I got at the London Permaculture Festival last week and decided to help promote it, unfortunately the date of the event is just next week and is far too late for me to be able to even attampt to attend. I will now hopefully be able to book it for next year if possible …

This years event will be held between Thursday 10th to Saturday 13th of August 2017 and you can still book tickets on their website.

Watching the video (3.5 mins long) this is definitely an event which is worthwhile to go to, I’m sadly going to miss the opportunity this year, it looks excellent especially for kids!

Here in the UK, research statistics provided by water saving product companies that produce products like specialist shower heads show that the average bathtub needs around 80 Litres of water, the average 8 minute shower consumes around 62 litres of water…

According to the study, the average eight-minute shower used 62 litres of hot water, and some power showers can use up to 136 litres, compared with an average bath’s 80 litres. These findings have been widely reported – in the Daily Mail, The Independent and the BBC, among others.
They are claiming that their special shower head, coupled with a short 4 minute shower will consume almost half of this (32 Litres of water) and that it could take you less than a year to make your money back from the purchase if you are on a water meter.

 

Enter the Tabo method of the Philippines (known as Tabo-Tabo):
  • 1x Bucket (normally 10 – 12 Litres which is around 2.6 UK Gallons),
  • 1x handled Jug (Tabo) of any shape but we like the ones used in kitchen measuring,
  • Water source and area you can splash around (bathtub or shower)

Most people use about 1 – 2 buckets worth of water to finish a normal Tabo session, I use less than One! (1) no jokes! It’s quite simple, fill the bucket with the right water temperature you are comfortable with, use the Tabo to wet yourself (takes two usually if you pour slowly), then just rub your soap around with whatever defoliating cloth you use or sponge etc, then rinse once complete. Note: This is a body only shower, does not include shampooing, hence why some people with long hair seem to use 1.5 to 2 buckets worth of water per session (Which still, is not that much at 20/24 Litres Max / 5.2 Gallons)
It takes me around 7 minutes to finish if I am busy and need to get onto other things asap and I always have about 1/6th of the bucket left over still.

In comparison:

Tabo: 12 Litres or Less / More
Water Saving Showerhead and short 4 min Shower Session: 32 Litres or More
Bathtub (UK average): 80 Litres or More
Power Shower Head (Time unknown but might be 8 min standard): 136 Litres or More

The Tabo Tabo method Still saves an additional 7,300 Litres of water versus the Special Water saving shower head Per Year! …

You could even obtain or have a nice wooden treated Bucket and Ladle made if you wanted to get a bit fancy or to avoid being embarrased when guests visit, just remember to turn the wooden bucket upside down to preserve the wood and prevent rot once not in use.

In the Metro London newspaper today I read an article which is basically reporting on a possible push for the all out ban on Diesel engined vehicles starting in London to help the countries ”commitment” in reducing emissions.

I am not a fan of mainstream media at all and this is why! (They either don’t know themselves [yet can still call themselves ”Investigative Journalists!”], or they are perhaps deliberately keeping quiet on the subject below?)
Most people do not know that the Diesel Engine was actually designed with Bio Fuels in mind! The inventor himself spoke of this in the days of his creation, In fact, there are companies out there that not only produce kits which you can install in your Diesel engined vehicle, they even offer a full installation as well.
These kits are filtration systems which enable you to run your vehicle on Frying Oils which you can obtain for Free from restaurants and Take Away shops such as fish and chip shops etc!
It doesn’t mean that you have to choose between Diesel or Bio-Fuels only, you can run your vehicle on both albeit not at the same time so, Diesel can be the back up once your supply of Free Vegetable Oil runs dry for a period of time!

Don’t like the idea of installing a filtration kit? No problem, there are people who pre-filter and refine these oils for you and you pay them per liter! I have heard that there is one operating in the Elephant and Castle area of South London and I think they are based at a Farmers Market. The pre-filtered / refined Bio Fuel can be used directly in the Engine itself without any modifications being done!

Stop Heathrow Expansion! Clean Air Is More Important Than A Stronger Economy For The Rich …

Another article I read today in another newspaper on my commute home, states that ”staff at Heathrow Airport” are to be given a £2000 incentive per vehicle, if they switch from diesel Engined vehicles to Petrol ones, they claimed in the article that staff drive 27,000 Diesel Vehicles into Heathrow, reading on, it became clear that these are not personal vehicles but all the combined vehicles from contractors and essential equipment at the airport!
So the agenda is clear, with the push for a Third Runway at the busiest airport in the World, which is in the city that has been rated as having the worst air quality in the whole of Europe… it’s obvious that there is some kind of underhand corruption going on. I don’t know about you, but honestly, I couldn’t give a Cr*p about what some business think tank says about our economy if ”we don’t listen  and not build a third runway” .. I really couldn’t care, isn’t it obvious /common sensical that we would rather have clean air and healthy bodies than a predicted better economy?
What good is having a secured low waged job at Heathrow only to be diagnosed with Cancer well before you get to retire?!?

People Need To Start Thinking For Themselves And Not What Their Newspaper Tells Them!

Rudolf Diesel: Intended The Diesel Engine To Be Run On Bio Fuels

1: The Government does not give companies with Diesel vehicle fleets any tax breaks if they use Bio Fuels in their vehicles,
2: With the above in mind, then do they really want to meet or exceed their targets for low emissions? Why can I get a tax break if I fill up with Diesel but not when I fill up with Bio-Fuels despite receiving a Receipt from the Fuel Supplier?
3: Currently, the Diesel engine is an already existing design which works with Bio-Fuels without much needed modifications (If any at all), So Why Ban Them ?!?! They are basically Getting Rid Of The Solution!

A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity (2016) Documentary

This Documentary follows on the subject of Eco Village / Community based settlements, filmed in Australia with some commentary from David Holmgren and is a joyful watch, you can see a few mini homes built from recycled materials etc…

There are discussions about the world banking system and how even it needs a radical change in order to secure a better future, this is a very interesting documentary for anyone interested in the subject or similar

Just the other day I was in a desperate need of any kind of container to plant some Sunchokes (aka Jerusalem Artichokes), Comfrey Bocking 14 and ‘Czar’ Runner Beans which I was ”gifting” to some relatives overseas. I had said that the plants will need some care until a root system was established because these plants are going from a Temperate Climate into the Tropics and luckily I happened upon these ready to be thrown away bags, from a recent clothing shopping spree.

Paper bags are ususally quite strong when supplied in Malls / Shops where the customer is expected to buy heavy loads, the best part is that I intend to merely submerge the plant with it’s paper ”pot” directly into the ground such as those common compostable / biodegradeable plant pots – completely eliminating the need for plastics and giving the plant and other organisms some additional nutrients!

Method:

Step 1: Take bag and cut vertically in half, you can pull out any handles / straps and re-use those later if you like

Step 2: Once cut, lay both pieces down on their thinner Vertical Sides as in the below photo, then deicde for yourself how large (wide at the base) you need your two pots so you can follow the follding lines and cutting lines in the diagram further below …

Re-Purposing a Bench Paper Bag into Two Plant Pots – Step 2

Step 3: In the below diagram, the following notes are key to complete this project:

The RED Line is the base Horizontal folding line,
The two Orange Lines are the side Vertical folding lines
The two Dotted Green Lines are the only cuts you will need to make

Once all folded and ready
, the final step is using a stapler to keep it together and perhaps to re-attach the handles for ease of transport and handling (Optional)

 

 

So here it is, as stated in a recent post, I missed last year’s Blackberry picking season due to being very busy with projects in my free time and the sad realisation that I had also missed Sweet Chestnut season TWO YEARS in a row!!

There really is not much of an excuse for not foraging for Blackberries considering they are so widespread in the UK and the fact that you can freeze them until needed (this may not be suitable for some recipes however.)

2 kg’s of Blackberries in a Large Saladmaster Pot

 

Ingredients and Equipment:

  • 2 kg ( ) Blackberries, freshly picked or from frozen
  • 1.450 kg ( ) Granulated Sugar
  • Juice of 1.5 Lemons
  • Large Pot
  • Cleaned Re-useable Jam / Honey or other Jars with Lids
  • Tongs if possible
  • Small Pot or Pan
  • Oven Gloves
  • Wooden Spoon and a Ladle
  • NOTE: this same recipe can be followed in a smaller amount ie: 1 kg of Blackberries with Juice of 1 Lemon and 750g of Granulated Sugar

Method:

Step 1: Place your freshly washed and rinsed jars inside your oven and leave there until later

Step 2: Place the jar lids inside a small pan or pot, covered in water ready to being to the boil (this is where you use the tongs, to take them out of the water one by one when needed)

Step 3: Slowly heat the Blackberries until they give off some of the juice liquid, you can help them along by semi squashing with a spatula or potato masher, this should take maybe 5 minutes (expect more if your blackberries were frozen)
Note: If you want your jam to be lumpy thick, minimise how much you stir and squash the blackberries)

Step 4: Now add in the Lemon Juice as well as the Sugar, mix well then bring it all to the boil, once boiling, simmer gently until it thickens and reaches 105 Degrees Celsius

Step 5: When there is an obvious change in the density of the liquid (becomes runny / watery) you can start boiling the water in the small pot / pan and switch your oven on to a high temperature (150 Degrees Celsius) to start sanitizing your jars and their lids.
After your Jam-to-be has boiled nicely for around 30minutes to an hour since adding in the other ingredients, you are looking to have a temperature of around 105 Degrees Celsius before you switch off the heat and start filling your jars, there is a Simple Method to check if it is the right temperature without needing to obtain a Candy Thermometer, just do the Cold Plate Test.

Step 6: Once happy with the thickness after testing on a plate, start ladling the Jam into the jars one by one (I keep the other jars in the oven and only take out one at a time)
As soon as a jar is fill, use a damp cloth or tissue to remove any bits on the rim of the jar then place a lid and give a good firm twist, place the jar on a cloth or tissues away from the reach of kids etc.and let sit until morning or a few hours later.
Note: Oven gloves and tongs will be needed at this stage

I managed to fill 6x small / medium, 2x medium to large and 1x Large Jar which was quite impressive, note that the jars are mostly different, I do re-use any jars that I can from my grocery shopping, it does work and jams / chutneys I preserved last year are still fine today – there is absolutely No Need to go out and buy expensive specialist ”preserving jars” in fact, the one time I had a failure is in a dedicated larny Kilner Preserving Jar!

Date and label them if you wish, then store in a pantry or cupboard which is not too close to your cooking station.
